Professore ordinario di Storia contemporanea

Dopo avere conseguito il Dottorato di ricerca in “Storia della società europea”, ha effettuato studi presso università e istituzioni sia italiane, sia estere, in particolare negli Stati Uniti, vincendo una borsa di ricerca Fulbright a Stanford e una borsa di ricerca presso il Rockefeller Archive Center di New York. È stata poi Visiting Scholar all’Università di Cambridge e all’Università di Stanford; in seguito ha insegnato come Kratter Visiting Professor alla Stanford University e come Fulbright Visiting Professor all’Università di Georgetown a Washington, Fellow presso il Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences e presso il Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, National Museum of American History (Smithsonian Institution), Washington DC.
Ricercatrice dal 1998 e associato dal 2002, ha insegnato prima presso l’Università di Torino, e poi alla Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia e al Master di giornalismo dell’Università di Milano. È fondatrice e direttrice del Centro di ricerca interdipartimentale MIC - Moda Immagine Consumi presso l’Università di Milano, un’istituzione che promuove ricerche scientifiche e mostre nel settore. 

Interessi  di ricerca

Storia culturale, politica ed economica del Novecento, in particolare la cultura nel periodo fascista e la storia dell’editoria. La modernizzazione dell’Italia e dell’Europa nel secondo Novecento, con particolare attenzione alla nascita della società dei consumi, il modello americano, il ruolo degli imprenditori, i cambiamenti nel mondo del commercio, le nuove “culture del consumo”. La storia sociale ed economica dei consumi alimentari e di moda. 

Full Professor of Contemporary History

Ph.D. in History of European Society, Milan, Emanuela Scarpellini is Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Milan. She was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and Cambridge University and received the Rockefeller Archive Center Grant, the Hagley Center Grant for Scholarly Research (in 2005 and 2008), the Henry Belin du Pont Research Grant (2013), and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship for her researches in the United States. She was Kratter Professor at Stanford University in 2004, Fulbright Visiting Professor at Georgetown University (Washington) in 2006, and Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2010–2011. She is the founder and Director of the Research Centre MIC - Moda Immagine Consumi (Fashion, Image, and Consumer Culture) at the University of Milan, an institution promoting scientific studies and exhibitions in the field. She is also a contributor to historical and cultural reviews, to Italian newspapers in the cultural pages, and to historical programmes on radio and television.

Research interests

The political and cultural history of fascism; the economic and social aspects of Italian and European modernization in the second half of the twentieth century – with particular regard to the development of a consumer society, the spreading of mass culture from the United States, changes in the trade structure, and the role of consumers; the history of consumption in Italy in the twentieth century, in particular food and fashion consumer cultures.
